Overview

About LM Monitor

LM Monitor is a menu bar app for Macs that run local language models in LM Studio. While a model generates, the menu bar shows live tokens per second; while it reads a prompt, it shows prompt-processing progress; otherwise it shows the last request's speed. Click it for the full picture.

The popover shows a live card for each parallel slot, prefix-cache reuse, time to first token, context use with a truncation badge, and a model card with architecture, quantization, size, engine version and a memory-fit verdict: fits, tight or will swap. From there you can unload the model, start the server or check whether a model on disk will fit before you load it.

A System tab tracks CPU with the performance and efficiency core split, GPU utilization, GPU memory against the macOS budget, RAM, memory pressure, swap, disk, temperatures, and power for CPU, GPU, Neural Engine and DRAM, with 10-minute history graphs. History keeps your last 1,000 requests with per-model averages and CSV export.

Alerts catch GPU out-of-memory errors, failed model loads, a full KV cache, swap, thermal throttling, context overflow and runaway generations, and each alert tells you what to do. LM Monitor reads LM Studio's own logs, so it sees every request, whether it comes from the chat window, curl or another tool. It never reads or stores prompt or response text.

Features

What it does

A macOS menu bar app that shows live tokens per second, prompt processing, cache reuse, context use and system load for LM Studio, and warns about problems.
  • Live speed in the menu bar

Tokens per second while generating and prompt-processing percent while prefilling, in four display modes.

  • Per-slot live card

Progress, time remaining and cache reuse for each parallel request.

  • Memory-fit verdict

Know whether a model fits, is tight or will swap before you load it.

  • System vitals

CPU cores, GPU, GPU memory budget, RAM, swap, disk, temperatures and power, with history graphs.

  • Request history

Your last 1,000 requests with median tokens per second, prefill speed and time to first token per model, exportable to CSV.

  • Alerts that explain the fix

GPU out-of-memory, swap, throttling, context overflow and runaway generations, each with what to do next.

  • Model controls

Unload a model, start the server or open LM Studio straight from the popover.

  • Private by design

Only counts and timings are kept. Prompts and responses are never read or stored.

  • Nothing to route

Sees every request on LM Studio's port without a proxy, kernel extensions or root access.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Can't find what you're looking for? See the store FAQ or write to humans@thinktools.dev.

What do I need?
A Mac on macOS 13 or later (Apple Silicon recommended) and LM Studio 0.4 or later with its lms command-line tool installed. LM Monitor finds lms automatically and falls back to LM Studio's server logs if it is missing.
Does it work with Ollama or other runtimes?
No. LM Monitor is built around LM Studio's logs and REST API, for both llama.cpp and MLX engines. MLX models show prompt progress, cache reuse and final stats, but not live per-slot detail.
Will it slow my models down?
It adds very little load. It reads LM Studio's logs and counters that macOS already provides, samples every one or two seconds, and nothing is routed through it. The optional proxy is off by default.
What is the difference between the two tiers?
App gives you the macOS app, a license key and all updates. App + source code adds the complete Swift source and build script so you can change it and build it yourself, plus priority email support.
macOS asks me to confirm the first launch. Is that normal?
Yes, for apps downloaded outside the App Store. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway, or right-click the app and choose Open. You only need to do this once.
How do updates, support and refunds work?
Updates are delivered through your order page, and email support comes from real people at humans@thinktools.dev. For refund terms, see Refunds.
